Prof. Soyinka |
Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, says he has shredded his United States
Green Card following the emergence of Donald Trump as the US president.
Speaking to the AFP news agency at a conference in Johannesburg, Mr.
Soyinka, a professor of Literature, said he had fulfilled his earlier
vow made ahead of the US presidential election.
“I have already done it, I have disengaged [from the United States]. I have done what I said I would do,” Mr. Soyinka, 82, said.
Mr. Soyinka had said he would destroy his card if Mr. Trump triumphed
over his major challenger and candidate of the Democratic Party,
Hillary Clinton, in the November 8 election.
“The moment they announce his [Trump’s] victory, I will cut my green
card myself and start packing up,” Mr. Soyinka had told a gathering at
Oxford University.
As soon as it became clear that Mr. Trump had emerged victorious at
the elections, social media became agog with calls for Mr. Soyinka to
fulfill his vow.
The Nobel laureate responded with a note he titled “Red Card, Green
Card – Notes Towards the Management of Hysteria”, wherein he said he
would not be bullied into fulfilling “a private decision whose execution
was already in the making”.
He also hinted to The Interview magazine that he could fulfil his
promise on January 20 as soon as Mr. Trump is sworn as president.
“Come January 20, 2017; watch my WOLEXIT,” the Interview quoted Mr. Soyinka as saying.
