A former Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, has been arrested by the Department of State Services, DSS.
Ihejirika was reportedly arrested by the DSS on Tuesday night at his Maitama, Abuja residence, over his alleged sponsorship of the Independent People of Biafra, IPOB agitators.
Reports also said his arrest may not be unconnected to the ongoing
$2.1 billion arms purchase probe involving former National Security
Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki (rtd).
It will be recalled that different allegations have been leveled
against Ihejirika since he retired from the Army. One of such
allegations was that he, alongside a former Governor of Borno State, Ali
Modu Sheriff, were the sponsors of the violent Boko Haram insurgents.
The army under his watch was also accused by the Amnesty
International of massive human rights abuses in the Boko Haram theater
in the north east of the country.
Both men denied the allegations. Ihejirika had described it as frivolous and an attempt to distract security agencies.
