A 7-year-old boy by the name
Chibuike Miracle Oramalu, who has been in police custody at the Enugu state
police command over alleged murder for more than a month has been released.
Chibuike, a primary two pupil was
put behind bar as a result of the sad incident where he unknowingly pulled the
trigger of a gun belonging to his mother’s employer, Edward Oforma. As a result
of the Chibuike’s mistake, he killed a 12-year-old boy by the name Oluebube
Boniface around the Independence Layout area of Enugu state on Sunday, May 29.
Chibuike's mother, Nwakaego how the killing occurred. She stated that her
employer’s son had told her two sons to assist with the cleaning of his
father’s room. She said in the course of doing that, Chibuike had found the gun
and showed it to his elder brother who told him to return it but he did not
return the gun. He rather mistakenly pulled the gun’s trigger. She said as a
result of that action of pulling the trigger, a bullet struck Oluebube who was
in another compound, with the latter dying on the spot.
Nwakaego, through her lawyer, Olu
Omotayo of the Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network cried out over
Chibuike’s continued detention while the owner of the gun, Oforma was not
apprehended or even invited by the police for interrogation.
However, in a swift response, Enugu
state commissioner for police Emmanuel Ojukwu came out to clarify the issue.
Ojukwu said Chibuike was not in detention. Before the 7-year-old Oramalu
re-gained his freedom, the Enugu state police boss had earlier said on
Wednesday, July 13 that they were keeping the boy in order to protect him from
jungle justice or avoid any harm come to him from the aggrieved family of the
deceased.
