Voting exercise |
In the aftermath of the controversial Rivers state legislative election rerun, news has emerged that a corps member who was used by INEC for election duties was killed by unknown gunmen.
Speaking to Channels TV this morning on Sunrisedailynow, the resident electoral commission, REC, Anieidi Ikoiwak, however said that the deceased was killed hours after the conclusion of elections. According to him, the victim, whose name was not disclosed ''was going home in the company of about two other corps members when they were accosted by gunmen. Two ran away and one was gunned down''.
He said, ''NYSC later found his body''. He further stated that it is not clear if the corps member was marked for death by assassins or was a victim of the general chaotic and bloody situation that characterised the exercise on that day, affirming that ''rivers people did not prepare for election but prepared for killing and maiming''.
When asked about the kind of protection offerd the corps members used for INEC duties, the REC said that it is practically impossible for a policeman to be assigned to all INEC staff, full time or ad hoc. He however advocated that communities should rather take part in the protection of citizens. According to him, ''the corps member was killed in the community where he was residing and rendering national service''.
There is also a report of another corps member yet to be accounted for.
